Quinn Joins Skyler’s Safety Squad
Join Quinn as she discovers what it means to be part of Skyler’s Safety Squad. Inspired by the real-life legacy of firefighter Skyler Blackie, this beautifully illustrated children’s book takes young readers on an adventure filled with learning, discovery, and important lessons that can help keep families safe.
In this first Safety Squad adventure, Quinn learns why firefighters recommend sleeping with bedroom doors closed at night. Through engaging storytelling and vibrant illustrations, children and caregivers are encouraged to explore this simple but important fire safety lesson together.
The Skyler’s Safety Squad series uses storytelling to help families start meaningful conversations about fire safety, one lesson at a time.

about the author
Hi, I’m Jessica.
I’m a parent of four children and the creator of the Skyler’s Safety Squad series.
This project began as a way to honour my brother, Skyler, a firefighter whose dedication to helping and educating others continues to inspire me every day. Through his work, he taught countless people about the importance of fire safety, and I wanted to find a way to continue sharing those lessons with future generations.
As a parent, I know how powerful stories can be for teaching important ideas and starting meaningful conversations. That’s why I created Skyler’s Safety Squad. Each adventure introduces a practical fire safety lesson through engaging stories children can enjoy alongside the adults who care for them.
My hope is that these books help families learn together, build confidence, and create safety habits that can last a lifetime, while also celebrating the legacy of a brother who spent his life helping others stay safe.
Thank you for being part of the journey.
Jessica

the inspiration
My brother, Skyler, was someone who dedicated his life to helping others.
As a teenager, he worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor, teaching water safety and helping people build confidence in and around the water. Later, he became a firefighter, where that same commitment to serving his community continued. No matter the role, Skyler believed that knowledge mattered and that taking the time to teach someone could make a real difference.
He was also an incredible uncle.
Skyler shared a special bond with his niece, Quinn. He loved spending time with her, answering her endless questions, and sharing his passion for firefighting and helping others. The curiosity, enthusiasm, and sense of adventure that Quinn brings to these stories are inspired by the real little girl who looked up to her uncle so much.
After losing Skyler, I found myself thinking often about the lessons he taught and the values he lived by. As my family grew, that feeling became even stronger. I wanted all of my children, including those who never had the chance to meet their uncle, to know the kind of person he was and the things he cared about most: kindness, service, courage, and helping others stay safe.
That’s how Skyler’s Safety Squad began.
What started as a way to honour my brother grew into a mission to help families have important conversations about fire safety through stories children can enjoy and remember. Each Safety Squad adventure focuses on a different safety lesson, encouraging children and caregivers to learn together while building habits that can last a lifetime.
I often think about how proud Skyler would be to see Quinn at the heart of these stories and helping inspire safety conversations with children and families. My hope is that through these books, his passion for teaching and helping others will continue to make a difference for years to come.
